New ragdoll owner - advice please

Postby bluemoon » Saturday, 06 March 2010, 8:31 PM

Hi,

I just got a new ragdoll yesterday, his name is Blue Moon and he is adorable. I am a first time cat owner, so I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong, but I feel like my kitty is always walking around the house meowing, or it seems more like crying. He does this especially when he is not in the room with me, and sometimes even when i am holding him.

I was under the impression that ragdolls are not very vocal, but this one is definitey very vocal. It is only his second day in my home, so maybe he is still scared? Although i didnt get that impression because he is jumping around and playing with everything now.

I live in an apartment and really need him to keep relativey quiet, especially when I am out at work all day. I dont want him crying all day until I get home!
Is there anything I can do to make him cry less?

Any help much appreciated.

First off ~ congratulations!!!

It sounds as though your little one is lonely. Keep in mind that he was probably used to the breeder's home and being with mom and littermates. He is now taken to a strange place. With time, he should get used to your home. Mine are 2 and 3 years old and will still occassionally call. I just call back "Momma is here.", etc and they are fine.

When you leave you might want to leave a t-shirt of yours out for him so that he has something with your scent on. Another idea is to keep him confined to only one room when you leave (less intimidating than the whole apartment).

Good luck, and enjoy the fun of being owned by a raggie. :D

Thanks so much for the reply!
And yes i think you are right, he probably is lonely and being a bit of an attention seeker. Some of the cries are just so high pitched tho! lol
Did you find that yours cried a lot more when you just got them as well?

Mine did not cry when I got them (except when they were in their safe room and wanted to be out with the humans and other cats). You might just have a 'talker' there. If he has plenty of attention, food, water... if he has been to the vet and got a clean bill of health... then I think you will just have to let him be who he is. If he is the only cat/pet, then he might be lonely for a animal friend. I agree with Karen than you should give him anything that might be comforting to him... like a shirt that smells like you, a bowl of dry food (if he is already eating dry and don't change brands)... and spend as much time playing with him and cuddling with him as you can. :)

This really belongs in Ragdoll Chat...

But congratulations! It's normal for a kitten to be a bit talky when they get to their new home. After all, they are used to a busy, cat-filled environment and that usually changes when they go home. I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to encourage it...talk back and if you don't, don't answer after an initial "here I am" to allow the kitten to find you if that is what they are trying to do. Ragdolls are often "like to be near you" cats, so they like to know where their people are.

You might also leaving a radio on low for company...leaving something comforting to smell is also a good idea.
