Shedding

Postby Fbone » Wednesday, 10 March 2010, 5:21 AM

My one-year old female is shedding an unmerciful amount of fur year round. So much more than my previous male.

Do females shed more than males or is there some other fixable cause?

The daily brushing and vacuuming is now part of my resume.

Thanks.

No, females do not shed more. Is there a fixable cause: Yes, to some extent. Lower the temperature.

It is a spring time. Cats shed when it is hotter, I am in Vancouver, Canada, you probably saw in the Olympics that we had Rhododendrons blooming in February - my cats shed like crazy. I remember how weather forecase said it will cool off - no, baby, it will not cool off, cats know better!

I find that adding Vit E and oils to their food will improve the coat, not sure amount of shedding though. But definitely the texture.

Sorry, but not much you can do other than groom the kitty. A Zoom Groom brush with rubber fingers can help remove the loose fur. However, you should also know that the cat will continue to lose hair the more you brush, so don't groom them bald!

Thanks for the replies. My home's temp is about 68F. I can lower it a little and move her cat tree where she sleeps away from the baseboard and window.

The Zoom Groom is great at removing loose hair. I'll most likely have her professionally groomed in the Spring. Her backside needs regular trimming and I noticed she gags on her ruff.

I noticed some fabrics attract hair more than others and Static Guard helpful too.

Unfortunately, this is definitely one of the things about owning pets...my previous short haired cats also shed, but the hair on my current two Ragdolls is very fine and silky and for some reason I seem to have more of it too. Not much to do other than feed a good food and groom regularly. Those who bathe their cats or have them groomed report a bit less fur, but a good vacuum can make things more livable.
